The Irish American Hockey Association, in partnership with the Boston Bruins Charitable Foundation and the Boston Bruins Alumni recently returned from the first ever Boston Bruins Alumni trip to Ireland which benefited the development Youth Hockey in Ireland.
With the opening of Ireland’s first and only ice hockey rink in December 2006; the kids of Ireland have taken to the game of ice hockey like no other sport and the passion and devotion to the sport is infectious as the game of ice hockey grows in Ireland. The Irish American Hockey Association continues to assist youth hockey efforts in Ireland including helping the Dundalk Bulls who are one of the organizations that directly benefit (financially and with equipment donations) from the Annual "Irish Ice Hockey Classic" held each year in Boston every St. Patrick's Day week-end.
The Irish American Hockey Association has worked with youth hockey groups in Ireland including the Dundalk Bulls who co-hosted the event in Ireland. Aeidamar Sally of the Dundalk Bulls organizes cross border ice hockey games with the Belfast Junior Giants and other teams from Northern Ireland and Scotland. Aeidamar points out that “It is fantastic to see Catholic and Protestant kids mixing and becoming fast friends, particularly in the under 10/12s age group. These kids who would never have met if not for their love of Ice Hockey and these young hockey players are developing real and measurable friendships across the border due to their common interest and love of the game of ice hockey”.
In order for hockey to grow and flourish in Ireland, events of this kind are crucial and the support being offered by the Irish American Hockey Association and the Boston Bruins Alumni team will assist the Bulls organization take a giant step forward. Aeidamar Sally expects that the Bulls Youth Hockey Organization will be able to raise $30,000 Euro ($43K US) as a result of the upcoming Bruins Alumni trip to Ireland.
The IAIHA is working closely with John Breen, Town Manager of the city of Killarney, as well as a number of other city and government leaders throughout Ireland, in order to facilitate the vision of creating additional hockey opportunities for Irish children throughout the Free Republic of Ireland. One of the main objectives of the IAIHA is to provide the children of Ireland with every opportunity to enjoy the game of hockey as we have in the US and Canada.
The Irish American Hockey Association will be hosting 40+ youth hockey players from IRELAND at the 3rd Annual Irish American Ice Hockey Classic Botn 2010. During their week long stay in Boston March 2010, Bob Sweeney and other members of the Irish American Hockey Association will be conducting skills clinics for the Irish kids as well as arranging scrimmages with youth hockey teams in and around the Boston area during their 7 day visit.
Hopefully in the very near future, the kids of Ireland will be enjoyng the same life changing benefits of the game of ice hockey that we have here in North America.
